Outspan Hotel, Nyeri (Aberdares)
Outspan is situated in the town of Nyeri in the Aberdares, it is a gracious solid and comfortable hotel set in a well tended tropical garden with rolling lawns. The 44 rooms are spacious and airy, most with fireplaces and garden access. The eight rooms in the Chania wing are wood paneled with a fireplace, balcony, satellite television and minibar.
The remaining rooms also with garden access are older in style, reminiscent of the 1920s with large bathrooms, a legacy from Colonial days.
The majority of the rooms have baths only while 11 have both a bath and a shower. Breakfast and lunch are taken on a wide veranda with views of Mount Kenya. In the evening dinner is served in a baronial style dining room complete with parquet floors, Chippendale chairs and white linen. The furnishings and fabrics in the comfortable lounges and public rooms are particularly tasteful.
After lunch you can visit the Kikuyu Village in the grounds of the hotel where authentically dressed Kikuyus perform traditional dances and songs. There is a bird walk at 7am and a river walk at 10am that should not be missed. Your guide will identify the flora that grows on the banks of the Chania River, the highlights of which are the massive five hundred year old Mugumo Tree and a waterfall gorge where the river squeezes between black rocks.
Within the 30 acres of the Outspan there is a swimming pool, squash and tennis courts and a snooker room. In addition guests are welcome to use the challenging 18-hole Nyeri Golf Course next door to the hotel. The two conference rooms each take 70 delegates comfortably and make an ideal venue for meetings. Excursions such as visits to a coffee farm and the nearby Chania Falls, fishing expeditions to Lake Naivasha and Lake Nukuru or game drives in the Salient, Solio and Samburu game parks can be arranged at an additional cost. With a round or two of golf and a visit to nearby Treetops, the Outspan is a very special country hotel.
