Rusinga Island Lodge, Lake VictoriaSituated on Rusinga Island on the northeastern shores of Lake Victoria. The waters edge is dotted with huge wild fig trees and the garden is home to exotic trees, flowers and birds, many of which are unique to the area. The lodge is small and homely accommodating a maximum of 16 people in individual thatched cottages. There are four standard cottages and two family cottages, all have en suite bathrooms with shower only facilities, private verandahs and a view of Lake Victoria. The cottages are made from local papyrus, stone and wood and are decorated with local ornaments and colourful fabrics. Being by the waters edge the lodge is able to offer a variety of activities. Aquatic activities include fishing for Nile perch and tilapia, skiing, windsurfing and boat rides to the nearby bird islands where many bird species exist. The bird islands also offer exciting walks and trails for bird enthusiasts. A short walk from the lodge brings one to a gorge in which fossils dating back 20 million years can be seen and the site where in 1946 Mary Leakey found Proconsul Heseloni, the last common ancestor of the great apes and man.
Visits to Ruma National Park can be arranged at an additional cost, these visits can include an optional bush breakfast. The park has a great variety of animals and birds; it is where you can see the last surviving group of Roan antelope as well as the Jackson's hartebeest, oribi, Rothschild's giraffe, leopard, buffalo, topi and impala. Olonana, Masai MaraA luxury tented camp idyllically nestled in the heart of Kenya's big game country. Olonana extends a service and style reminiscent of the halcyon safari era of the early 1900's and offers a peaceful haven from which to explore the Masai Mara, one of nature's most thrilling ecosystems. The camp is very well positioned on the banks of the Masai Mara River. The 12 tents are spacious and comfortable, discreetly distanced from each other and the white canvas gives a very luxurious and romantic feel. Each tent has two queen size beds, a large verandah and an en suite bathroom, with showers only. All of the tents as well as the lounge, bar and dining area are situated on and have a view of the Mara River. Some of the meals are served on the deck that overlooks the river where crocodiles and hippo's bathe in the sun. Olonana offers night and day game drives, bush walks, a visit to near nearby Maasai village, bush dining and sundowners. The library and swimming pool are an ideal venue for a relaxing afternoon. |
